Moon Cactus

The Moon Cactus is popular because of the variety of sizes, textures, colours, and forms of cacti and succulent forms. They are commonly known as Gymnocalycium mihanovichii or Hibotan cactus. Hibotan cacti are found in desert environments across South America. Researchers find more than 80  species in that area. Moon cactus plants come in a variety of beautiful colours, including hot pink, blazing orange, and an almost fluorescent yellow.

These are little plants, measuring around half-inch (1 cm) in diameter on average. However, some varieties may grow up to 8 inches (20 cm) in diameter. The plant transplants onto a species that generates a lot of chlorophyll and can live for a long time on it. As a gift plant or southern exposure houseplants, they can show their beauty.

How to care

This cactus likes warm weather, but a minimum of 48 degrees F. (9 C.) to survive. During the hottest part of the day, use slatt slats to partially shade indoor plants from direct sunlight. To prevent standing water in the root zone, use unglazed shallow pots with multiple drainage holes. Try to water deeply so that the soil becomes fully moist and then wait for the moisture soil full dry. In winter stop watering and feed the plant with nutrient-dense soil.

How to Re-graft a Moon Cactus

The moon cactus is a grafted cactus that is unable to reproduce. If you observe the top of your moon cactus splitting from the rootstock cactus, follow these procedures to re-graft it:

  1. Cut the cactus’ colourful top off with a sharp knife.
  2. If you’re not going to use a new rootstock, take off the top layer of the old one.
  3. Put the moon cactus on the bottom of the rootstock and wrap rubber bands or twine around the whole cactus and container to keep it in place.
  4. Approximately, after two weeks the two cacti will bond together, then you can remove the rubber band or twine.
